Oral and maxillofacial pathology is both a branch of dentistry and pathology, which deals with the study of the nature, identification, etiopathogenesis, microscopic examination, diagnosis and prognosis of oro-facial lesions and diseases at its most superficial competencies.
At the deeper front molecular biology, genetics etc play a significant role in better understanding the disease pathology. Forensic odontology is also a segment within the spectrum of oral and maxillofacial pathology.
The department teaches and trains students in the subjects of Dental anatomy & Oral histology and Oral pathology & microbiology in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year BDS respectively.

Histopathology lab (Biopsy tissue processing and reporting)
Department has set up functional histopathology lab since 2014. Since its inception sincere attempts have been made to identify various oral diseases and assist oral surgeons to opt accurate treatment planning.
Multiple cases of oral cancers have been detected and have been referred to higher centres like Regional Cancer centre – Trivandrum, Malabar cancer centre – Thalassery and MVR cancer centre – Calicut.

Professor & Head
Dr. Suhas R Nayak is currently Professor and Head of the department. He has completed his BDS from Yenepoya dental college in 2008 & MDS degree from Rajah Muthiah Dental College in the year 2011. He has a total of 8 publications to his credit. He believes in hard work and dedication and has a keen interest in diagnosing the challenging cases of biopsy. He also keeps special interest in educating young minds, mentoring them and invoking passion for dentistry. He is the Nodal Officer for Student Support and Guidance Programme (SSGP) as well as mentoring in-charge.
