Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology

We bring "Medicine to Dentistry”. Our branch serves as a bridge between the two professions. Oral Medicine is the discipline of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of medically complex patients - including the diagnosis and management of medical conditions that affect the oral and maxillofacial region.

We treat patients with TMJ Disorders, Burning Mouth, Taste and Smell Disorders, Orofacial and Tooth Pain, Facial Neuralgias, Viral, Bacterial and Fungal Infections and Benign growths of oral cavity. Our doctors have treated thousands of patients whose underlying medical condition affects oral health and delivery of dental care.

Programs Offered

Educare Institute of Dental Sciences offers a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree programme in Dental Surgery. We also offer academic exchange programmes and research facilities. The academic rigour at EIDS is matched by the excellent system of equipping each student to seamlessly navigate into a professional life with the highest standards of knowledge, medical ethics and professional integrity.

Services Provided

  • We use x-rays to make images of the teeth and bones— those areas that are not seen when the dentist looks into the mouth
  • The information from these x-ray images (or radiographs) helps us diagnose dental decay, periodontal disease, and infections in patient’s jaws and some rare conditions like cysts and tumors of the jaw.
  • We are concerned with diagnosing routine and rare conditions affecting the oral cavity as well as educating the dental patients with concepts of oral and general health.
  • We cater to routine oral health needs of the general patients. We treat rare mucosal lesions affecting the oral mucosa and skin.
  • We treat painful afflictions of the maxillofacial region including non-dental conditions like neuropathic and psychosomatic pains.

Course Outcome

On completion of the undergraduate training programme the graduate should be able to display the following competencies:

  • Possess the ability to recognise common dental issues such dental caries, periodontal disease, and its effects.
  • Be able to distinguish oral mucosal lesions apart from normal changes
  • Be competent to recognise oral cavity precancerous and cancerous tumours and recommend patients to the appropriate specialisation for treatment.
  • Have a thorough understanding of common laboratory investigations and the interpretation of their results.
  • Be knowledgeable about medical issues that may emerge while treating systemically compromised patients and obtain prior precautions/consent from the appropriate medical specialist.
  • To develop a clinical diagnosis, order investigations, seek expert consultations, and map out a comprehensive treatment strategy for patients with oral lesions.
  • Be capable of taking intra-oral radiographs and interpreting the results.
  • Learn about numerous extra-oral radiographic methods, such as TMJ radiography and sialography.
  • Be familiar with jurisprudence and ethics, as well as the legal relevance of dental records

We are the first institution in northern Kerala to install the CBCT machine which is the most advanced diagnostic tool available in dentistry. We are the only college in Kerala who have a centralized LAN linked radiology, where real time radiographs can be viewed from any department in college.

 

We have a dedicated Tobacco Cessation centre, where all the patients wtih cigaratte smoking or other delerious habits, who wish to quit can undergo evaluation, and professionally guided tobacco counseling.

 Our institution was one of the first institutions in the entire state to install in our department, the most advanced diagnostic tool available in Dentistry that is Cone Beam Computed Tomography, which has lead to cutting edge diagnosis and research in our Field.

  • Sanjeetha Sadiya, House surgeon of ECIDS bagged best paper award for paper presentation in National IAOMR UG conference held at Calicut in the year 2016
  • Sherin and Dr. Shijiya took first position in quiz in National IAOMR UG conference held at Calicut in the year 2016
  • Aysha Rishin, house surgeon of ECIDS secured first position in All India Dental E Poster Competition conducted by IDA Tellicherry  branch on World Tobacco Day
  • Final yr student AM Archana secured second prize in statewide Essay competition organized by IDA Kerala state and ASMIK in 2022
  • Sahil house surgeon posted in oral medicine and radiology won first prize for photography competition held by Anoor dental college in connection with world Radiology day on 8th Nov 2022.
  • Mr Shamil, final yr student of ECIDS – won first prize for Instagram Reels Competition on the topic Myths in dentistry conducted by Century Dental college.
  • Department had organised 2 day hands on course CT reporting in 2021 November, where faculty of oral medicine and radiology from various other institutions of the country learnt from us.
