Public Health Dentistry is the specialty of dentistry that promotes oral health, prevents and control of oral diseases. This specialty today stands at the cross roads of time with a very innovative future ahead and its takes pride in being the only specialty in dentistry which forms the first level of contact with the community and works at a grass root level to address the oral health related problems.
This Specialty focuses on teaching and learning of Public health Competencies through imparting a culture of self-directed learning, Research and Oral Epidemiological methods to study Oral Preventive Strategies and Oral Health Policy.
The ultimate aim of this specialty is to train undergraduate students in key aspects of Oral Health & Oral Disease, their risk factors and relation to systemic disease.

Dr Arun Kumar S MDS, HOD, Dept of Public health dentistry is a person relentlessly work towards the goal of academic excellence. He has numerous publications to her credit in reputed national and international journals. He is a certified Tobacco Counsellor and Trainer. His leadership quality, meticulous organising skills are his distinctive virtues which earned him the post of Academic Coordinator in EIDS since April 2023.

He is instrumental in pioneering research activities for undergraduate students and postgraduate students

Dr Faseela Nigar BDS, Lecturer, Completed her BDS in the year 2013 from Vivekananda Dental College for Women. She is currently working in the Dept of Public Health Dentistry. She is actively involved in academic activities and provision of Comprehensive Dental care at VPSV Arya Vaidya Sala Dental Satellite Centre, Kottakkal.

Dr Jithin Mohan BDS, Lecturer, Completed his BDS in the year 2022, an Alumni of Educare Institute of Dental Sciences. He is currently working in the Dept of Public Health Dentistry. Dynamic personality who involves himself in all department and Out-Reach Activities. He is the faculty in-charge of Tobacco Cessation Centre functioning in Clinical Department.
Students should be able to elicit case history along with Clinical Examination and able to use appropriate diagnostic aids enabling them to arrive at a proper diagnosis. They must also be able to use appropriate and provide comprehensive Oral health care to the patients with strict adherence to the Infection control protocol.
Learning through community outreach programs to enable Community oral health problems using the knowledge of Epidemiology and indices to arrive at Community Diagnosis and communicate the findings to the community.
Students' ability to plan, implement and evaluate appropriate Community-based Oral Health Programs for the Promotion of Oral Health and Prevention of Oral disease at the Community level for various target groups including school children.
The department also helps students to organise outreach programs which help to develop communication and administration skills to coordinate between appropriate manpower and resources for the delivery of Health/ Oral health care.
Students also learn to communicate health problems related to Environmental factors and associated with the community and other target audiences including Occupational hazards associated with the practice of dentistry
They learn ethical and Moral Standards related to patient care and management as well as Epidemiological Research, Community activities and Medico legal issues in the practice of dentistry.
