Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology

We bring "Medicine to Dentistry”. Our branch serves as a bridge between the two professions. Oral Medicine is the discipline of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of medically complex patients - including the diagnosis and management of medical conditions that affect the oral and maxillofacial region.

We treat patients with TMJ Disorders, Burning Mouth, Taste and Smell Disorders, Orofacial and Tooth Pain, Facial Neuralgias, Viral, Bacterial and Fungal Infections and Benign growths of oral cavity. Our doctors have treated thousands of patients whose underlying medical condition affects oral health and delivery of dental care.

Programs Offered

Educare Institute of Dental Sciences offers a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree programme in Dental Surgery. We also offer academic exchange programmes and research facilities. Dr. Asaf Aboobakkar MDS, Head of the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, is a dedicated professional committed to achieving academic excellence. With numerous publications in esteemed national and international journals, he has made significant contributions to the field. Renowned for his exceptional leadership qualities and meticulous organizational skills, he stands out as an inspiring academician. Course Outcome

On completion of the undergraduate training programme the graduate should be able to display the following competencies:

  • Possess the ability to recognise common dental issues such dental caries, periodontal disease, and its effects.
  • Be able to distinguish oral mucosal lesions apart from normal changes
  • Be competent to recognise oral cavity precancerous and cancerous tumours and recommend patients to the appropriate specialisation for treatment.
  • Have a thorough understanding of common laboratory investigations and the interpretation of their results.
  • Be knowledgeable about medical issues that may emerge while treating systemically compromised patients and obtain prior precautions/consent from the appropriate medical specialist.
  • To develop a clinical diagnosis, order investigations, seek expert consultations, and map out a comprehensive treatment strategy for patients with oral lesions.
  • Be capable of taking intra-oral radiographs and interpreting the results.
  • Learn about numerous extra-oral radiographic methods, such as TMJ radiography and sialography.
  • Be familiar with jurisprudence and ethics, as well as the legal relevance of dental records

We are the first institution in northern Kerala to install the CBCT machine which is the most advanced diagnostic tool available in dentistry. We are the only college in Kerala who have a centralized LAN linked radiology, where real time radiographs can be viewed from any department in college.

 

We have a dedicated Tobacco Cessation centre, where all the patients wtih cigaratte smoking or other delerious habits, who wish to quit can undergo evaluation, and professionally guided tobacco counseling.

ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN ORAL MEDICINE AND RADIOLOGY

 

  • Avanya, Asma, and Ajeesh Mohan secured the third prize in the reels competition conducted by the Department of Oral Medicine at Azeezia Dental College in March 2022
  • Oral Medicine and Radiolology awareness talk was delivered by Dr Sushanth, Dr. Asaf and Dr. Manjima in various paramamedical colleges in april 2023.
  • A state-level E-poster and quiz competition for dental students was organized by the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology on 26th April 2023.
  • Meera V Nair and Fathima Abdul Jaleel ,house surgeons got second prize in paper presentation at Nationsl OMR convention,held in Mahe in 2023.
  • Parvathi Devi house surgeon got third prize in paper presentation at Nationsl OMR convention,held in Mahe in 2023.
  • Final year part 1 students,Lekshmi Balaji and Meenakshi Subash bagged second prize for the poster presentation at National IAOMR UG conference held in KLE, Belgaum in July 2024.
  • Sandra Tresa Saju of final year Part 1 positioned second for paper preseantation at National IAOMR UG convetion held in Calicut in September.
